So yesterday I was talking to a few friends and one mentioned that he was getting his girlfriend flowers for her birthday, and how he wished he had something romantic to put on it (Pointedly looking at me). So I decided to oblidge, and in exchange for a few dollars (I ain't rich, and he is) I wrote him a short little corny poem. After this event, another one of my friends jokingly called me an art whore; which, while a flippant comment, got me thinking.
Can art be sold? Is it on the same level as a commodity like jewelry or computers? Most people would say no, art is....well, I suppose you could say art is almost on a sacred level when it comes to business. However, your perception is entirely dependent of whatever you call art. If designing and inventing is an art, shouldn't you be able to patent and sell your design? That is, after all, how progress is begun.
Almost every famous artist has sold works, though honestly, money probably was never a big allure, art fads often flight back and forth. If you have a narrower view, maybe art has to come from the soul, in which case, commisioned work is not art.
Then what is it? If art is truly in the eye of the beholder, then the purchased art is surely still art, as it is treasured by the buyer. Art commisioned for fashions sake could even be considered, as obviously there are admirers at the time.
Maybe we're all art whores, putting our mastery and skill to work for someone else, where our passioned has died to fuel admiration frm others. Maybe art is in the same league as thought, really nothing, while simultaneously affecting everything. Or, I'm completely insane, and am seriously overusing question marks.

I don't see anything wrong with selling our crafts. Hey, if someone is willing to pay, you'd be crazy not to oblige them.
If you could make a lucrative living from artwork, who wouldn't? I mean, who do we think we're writing/painting for? People! Even if it's just for ourselves, we want people to see it, admire it. Is feeding our ego any better than feeding our bellies?
Question mark over load down here as well...
This was directed to mass-produced 'art' as well, you get it? Like a video game (Kid on the inside, heh), true, it's creative, but it was solely designed for money, for a business. Personally, I think anything anyone percieves as art IS art, regardless of what it is.
Ow, brain cramp.

I still think it's okay, as long as the artistic process remains unhindered.
The goal of every artist is to display his art to as many people as possible...
Am i still not getting the point? X_X
